BMW is recalling a model in the US due to airbag problems

A small number of BMW SUVs have been recalled in the US, the report said. This is because the driver's airbag inflates and there is a risk that it will explode, throwing metal pieces and possibly injuring or killing the occupants of the vehicle.

US auto safety regulators said in documents released Saturday that the recall covers 486 X3, X4 and X5 SUVs from the 2014 model year equipped with these airbags, manufactured by Japan's Takata Corp.

About 30 million Takata inflators have raised safety questions.

The recall was issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Takata used volatile ammonium nitrate to create a small explosion to inflate the airbags in the event of a crash. But the chemical can deteriorate over time when exposed to high temperatures and humidity. It can explode with great force, blowing a metal canister and causing life-threatening injuries by spraying shrapnel.

Since May 2009, Takata inflation has killed at least 26 people in the United States and at least 30 worldwide, including people in Malaysia and Australia. In addition, around 400 people were injured.
